Quick Checks Before You Call
- Is the boiler on and working? If you have no heating either, the problem may be the boiler rather than the cylinder – see our boiler repairs page.
- Is the hot water timer or programmer on? Power cuts and clock changes can reset it.
- Is the immersion switch on? Check the switch on the wall (often in the airing cupboard) and that the fuse spur hasn’t tripped.
- On Economy 7? If the tank only heats overnight, check the Economy 7 timer and that the boost button hasn’t been left off.
Please don’t take the covers off the immersion or cylinder controls – there are live electrical parts behind them.
Common Reasons for No Hot Water
- Immersion element burnt out – the most common cause on electric systems. We carry replacement elements.
- Thermostat or high-limit cut-out tripped or failed – the cylinder’s safety cut-out switches off the heat if it gets too hot, and it can fail.
- Motorised (zone) valve stuck – on boiler-heated systems, the valve that lets hot water from the boiler into the cylinder can stick shut.
- Programmer or cylinder thermostat fault – the boiler isn’t being told to heat the hot water.
- Economy 7 timer fault – the tank isn’t heating overnight.
- Thermal store pump or control fault in flats with systems such as Gledhill PulsaCoil.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I have heating but no hot water?
Usually the motorised valve that sends hot water from the boiler to the cylinder is stuck, or the cylinder thermostat or programmer isn’t calling for hot water. It’s a common, fixable fault.
Why have I suddenly got no hot water from my immersion?
The most likely causes are a burnt-out immersion element or a tripped or faulty thermostat. Check the switch and fuse spur first, then call us.
Can I reset my hot water cylinder myself?
Some cylinders have a manual reset on the high-limit thermostat, but it is behind a cover with live parts. If it keeps tripping, there’s an underlying fault, so it’s best to have it checked.
How quickly can you come out?
We offer a same-day service across Leeds and are often with you within the hour. We’re open 24 hours, 7 days a week.
Do you charge a call-out fee?
No. We charge a fixed hourly rate from the time we arrive (a diagnostic charge applies) and give a fully itemised invoice.
