Common Joule Cylinder Problems
- Dripping from the tundish or outside pipe – often the external expansion vessel needs re-pressurising or replacing, or the pressure reducing valve is letting pressure creep up.
- No hot water – immersion element, thermostat or high-limit cut-out failure, or a motorised valve not opening so the boiler can’t heat the cylinder. See no hot water from your cylinder.
- Banging or noisy pipes when taps are turned off – often a sign of an expansion vessel or pressure problem.
- Low pressure – blocked strainer in the inlet valve or a faulty pressure reducing valve.
- Leaks from valves, compression fittings or the immersion boss.
How We Repair Your Joule Cylinder
We start by checking the cylinder’s safety devices and controls, test the expansion vessel charge and the incoming pressure, then explain what we’ve found and what it will cost before we carry on. Most Joule repairs – valves, expansion vessels, elements and thermostats – are done on the first visit with parts from the van. Once fixed, we test that every safety device is working before we leave.
Under Warranty?
Joule offer long warranties on their stainless steel cylinders, but they normally depend on the cylinder being serviced every year. If yours hasn’t been serviced recently, ask about our annual unvented cylinder service while we’re there.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who makes Joule cylinders?
Joule is an Irish manufacturer of stainless steel hot water cylinders. Their Cyclone range of unvented cylinders is widely fitted in UK homes.
Why does my Joule cylinder drip from the overflow?
The usual causes are an expansion vessel that has lost its air charge or a faulty pressure reducing valve. Both are common, inexpensive repairs.
Can you get Joule parts?
Yes. Many valves and components are standard parts we carry on the van, and Joule-specific parts can usually be sourced quickly.
Is it safe to keep using my cylinder if it’s dripping?
A small cold drip is not usually an emergency but should be fixed soon. If hot water or steam is coming out, turn off the boiler and immersion and call us straight away.
Do you charge a call-out fee?
No. We charge a fixed hourly rate from the time we arrive (a diagnostic charge applies) and give a fully itemised invoice.
