Hot Water Tank Leaking or Low Pressure? Same-Day Repairs
A puddle in the airing cupboard, water dripping through the ceiling below, or hot taps that have gone from strong to a trickle – these are all problems we fix every week on hot water tanks and cylinders across Leeds. We’re BPEC-qualified and G3-certified, so we can work on pressurised (unvented) cylinders as well as traditional hot water tanks.

If Your Hot Water Tank Is Leaking
- Turn off the cold water supply to the cylinder if you can find the valve (often on the cold pipe going into the cylinder or at the main stopcock).
- Turn off the boiler and immersion heater so the cylinder isn’t heating while it’s leaking.
- Keep electrics dry – if water is near the immersion or wiring, switch off at the fuse board.
- Then call us on 0113 232 9556.
Where Leaks Usually Come From
- Valves and compression fittings on the top or side of the cylinder
- The immersion heater boss, where the element screws into the cylinder
- Pipework and joints around the cylinder and airing cupboard
- The cylinder itself – less common, but older copper and some steel cylinders can corrode. If that’s the case we’ll tell you honestly and explain your options.
Low Hot Water Pressure
Unvented cylinders should give strong, mains-pressure hot water. If yours has become weak or keeps surging, common causes are:
- A blocked strainer (filter) in the cold water inlet valve
- A faulty pressure reducing valve
- Low incoming mains pressure – we’ll test this and tell you if it’s a water supply issue
- Partly closed or failing isolation valves
If only one tap or shower is weak, it may be the tap, shower valve or a blockage in that outlet – which we can also fix as part of our general plumbing service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my hot water cylinder leaking?
Most leaks come from valves, fittings or the immersion heater seal rather than the cylinder itself, and these can usually be repaired the same day.
What should I do if my hot water tank is leaking?
Turn off the cold supply to the cylinder or the main stopcock, switch off the boiler and immersion, keep water away from electrics, then call a plumber.
Why has my hot water pressure dropped?
On an unvented cylinder the usual causes are a blocked inlet strainer or a faulty pressure reducing valve. Low mains pressure in your street can also be a factor.
Will I need a new cylinder?
Usually not. Most leaks and pressure problems are fixed by replacing a valve, seal or fitting. If the cylinder itself is leaking, we’ll explain your options.
Do you charge a call-out fee?
No. We charge a fixed hourly rate from the time we arrive (a diagnostic charge applies) and give a fully itemised invoice.
